Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon will all be packed with tanned and toned locals sunning themselves in barely-there swimwear, vendors peddling fresh coconuts, and tourists nursing their caipirinhas. It's a scene — but that's just what makes Rio one of the best beach destinations in the world.

Musandam, Oman

till totally under the radar, Oman makes for a spectacular introduction to the Middle East. It's politically stable, the people are gracious, and it boasts an impressive range of landscapes, from modern city to desert to mountains to — you guessed it — beaches. The country's massive coastline has unspoiled sands and amazing weather in January (think balmy temps in the 80s). Even the beaches right in the country's capital, Muscat, are beautiful and serene, and you can go diving just south of the city, where the popular Al Munassir shipwreck lies. But for the most spectacular beaches, head to Musandam peninsula in the northernmost part of the country. Zighy Bay has clear, aquamarine waters and white sand that rival the Caribbean, with mountains rising straight from the shoreline.

Negril, Jamaica

This famously laid-back island is a great place to de-stress — especially in January, when the weather is warm and breezy and there's no threat of hurricanes. Head to Negril, where seven miles of soft golden sand beckon; rent kayaks and sailboats to explore the turquoise waters further. The sounds of live reggae and the ocean vistas will lull you into the "don't worry, be happy" mindset as you sip rum punch (or a Red Stripe, if you prefer) and chat up the friendly locals. Stay at the legendary Rockhouse Hotel & Spa, which boasts cabanas with private plunge pools built right into seaside cliffs.

Maldives

If what you seek is total relaxation in the lap of luxury, look no further than the Maldives. This low-lying nation is famous for its overwater villas and sparkling turquoise waters. As January is one of the driest months, you're almost guaranteed blue skies and bath-warm seas without a drop of rain. Made of about 1,200 islands, you can take your pick of powdery white beaches. But the Maldives are especially perfect for lovers of the sea, as the crystal clear waters and abundant coral reefs offer incredible snorkeling and diving, as well as boating excursions and surf safaris.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Looking for a great deal? Punta Cana is rife with all-inclusive resorts that offer great value, if you're not keen on having to do a lot of planning before planting yourself at the swim-up bar. January sees dry, warm days hovering in the 80s and sits nicely between the holiday crowds and the Carnival revelers in February. With the most beaches of any Caribbean island designated by the Blue Flag program for meeting high environmental standards, you'll find beautiful, clean, sandy stretches all along its 20-mile Coconut Coast. But Punta Cana's not short on activities for when you're ready to leave the sun lounger, either. Travelers can go kayaking, ziplining, sailing, and windsurfing.

Corn Islands, Nicaragua

While it does take a bit of effort to get there, the Corn Islands off Nicaragua's east coast may be the country's best-kept secret, with crystal-clear blue waters, swaying palms, and soft sands. While life is slow on both islands, Big Corn has a bit more traffic (literally — one road circles the island from which you can hail taxis or golf carts) and is the only island of the two that has 24-hour electricity. On Little Corn — aptly named, as you can cross the entire island from east to west on foot in about 15 minutes — you'll find a true deserted island experience. Your agenda for the day: snorkel or relax on the sand.

Sunshine Coast, Australia

With a name like Sunshine Coast, it should come as no surprise that this stretch of Queensland is decorated with beautiful golden beaches and frequented by happy, laidback locals. At the heart of the Sunny Coast is Noosa, a chic beach village with excellent boutique shopping and trendy eateries. Noosa's Main Beach is often touted as one of Australia's best, as it's protected by a reef and offers gentle, calm waters year-round.

Sayulita, Mexico

Less than an hour north of the mega resorts of Puerto Vallarta lies the chilled-out, bohemian town of Sayulita. In addition to boasting one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, you'll find plenty to do to keep busy. Hike the lush jungle surrounding the town, surf the legendary Pacific breaks, practice yoga with an ocean view, and eat your fill of amazingly fresh seafood (go for a ride with a fishing boat, and they'll make you ceviche from your catch). You won't find big-box tourism here, either. Instead, stay in a bungalow right on the beach. Best of all, Festival Sayulita, at the end of January, celebrates Mexican culture with five days of film, music, spirits, and food — balanced with yoga and stand-up paddle events, of course.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Get on board with the pura vida lifestyle in Costa Rica. In January, you'll undoubtedly have plenty of sunny days to practice your surf skills, laze on the golden beaches, and explore the rainforests. With direct flights to Liberia International Airport from many major FR cities, a winter escape to Guanacaste, in the northwestern part of Costa Rica, has become super accessible and affordable. While the surf town of Tamarindo is by far the most popular beach destination in the area, with tons of hotels and restaurants right off shore, trek a bit further north and you'll find prettier beaches with thinner crowds. Playa Conchal, tucked away in a private cove, requires a short walk along the coast to reach. But you'll be rewarded with a quiet beach made of tiny crushed shells and turquoise waters for snorkeling.

Eagle Beach, Aruba

Aruba claims to have the most sunny days per year of all the Caribbean islands, so you're sure to get great sunbathing weather (especially important in January when we've all been deprived of vitamin D). While away breezy, 82-degree days on the 20 powdery white beaches, including Eagle Beach, often ranked as one of the best beaches not only in the Caribbean but also in the world. Backed by many low-rise resorts, timeshares, and restaurants, Eagle Beach is outfitted with loungers for sunbathing and watersports equipment for rent. Aside from big storms, daily rain showers and thunder storms are almost completely gone, making November one of the driest months of the Fall season.

November temperatures may not be cold, but they’ll usually be comfortable with less humidity. While it doesn’t drop too low too often, the humidity will be noticeably lower, making it easier to be outdoors for longer periods of time. This month tends to also be a bit breezy, but warm temperatures and random hot days are still frequent.

Florida is the only place in the United States that maintains a subtropical to tropical climate all year round. Based on where you’ll be traveling, temperatures are likely to vary, with the warmest temps farther South. Melbourne is mostly a destination for snowbirds, but older audiences of all backgrounds will enjoy what this coastal city has to offer.

If relaxing on the sand at one of the many on-beach, private hotels and boutique resorts is not your vibe, due to the cooling water temperatures or colder wind beginning to roll through, there are many events and activities going on in town for your to partake in.

For instance, live music and professional orchestras can be enjoyed at the Melbourne Civic Theatre, as well as the Melbourne Community Orchestra and Space Coast Jazz Society. SWIM WITH THE MANATEES IN CRYSTAL RIVER

Where else can you swim with real Florida manatees? These gentle creatures can only be found in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and the Amazon, but Crystal River is the only place where you can legally swim with them. Crystal River, located on Florida’s Nature Coast, is the Winter destination for manatees seeking warmer waters than the ocean. While there are plenty of water adventures like kayaking and fishing, and dry land biking and exploring, no experience beats swimming with the manatees in Kings Bay. There are several outfitters that will take you on guided tours of the springs where these manatees refuge in the Winter. They’ll rent equipment and take you right into the water for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

EXPERIENCE WEEKI WACHEE

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is a local favorite almost year round, located in Hernando County. It’s claim to fame, other than the mermaids that frequent these waters, is the fact that the bottom of the springs has never been found. It’s so deep that even the most expert divers can’t reach the bottom. The currents are extremely strong in the springs, so the designated safe swimming area is in the Buccaneer Bay Waterpark.

Florida is filled with natural springs, but something completely unique to Weeki Wachee is the underwater shows performed daily. Weeki Wachee mermaids put these shows on for all ages, with themes from various movies and folklore. It’s a truly unique and magical experience for audiences to enjoy, before heading to the swim zone themselves.

Aside from watching the mermaids or splashing in the waterpark, guests can also rent paddleboards or kayaks, ride the river boat or take a ranger led tour of the springs.

CAMP IN BIG CYPRESS STATE PARK

GOLD COAST - BEST ALL-AROUND

The Gold Coast is one of the most famous parts of Florida, housing both Miami and Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic side. Miami has the highest temperatures in Florida all year, but also has the highest chance of being rattled with hurricanes as Florida’s first line of defense in most circumstances. However, November doesn’t typically bring too many storms and this is the time of year that Miami has more favorable water temperatures at 78.3°F (25.7°C).

Visitors can always expect Miami to be lively, especially in the bustling downtown area with a culturally diverse crowd. While November can still be hot and humid in Miami, the city remains a popular destination all year.

THE FLORIDA KEYS - BEST WEATHER

The Keys are an extremely popular destination all year round. November will have fewer visitors due to the chance of hurricanes, but the storm chances really drop off in November. The water averages 78.3°F (25.7°C), making it a great time to keep on lobstering through the season. Our best recommendations for beaches are those on Key West, Key Largo and Marathon, as well as Bahia Honda State Park and the Dry Tortugas National Park.

The Keys are an extremely unique stretch of islands connected by the Overseas Highway. There are many historical landmarks and island tours to take, along with loads of inshore, offshore and on land recreational activities.

TREASURE COAST: UPSCALE VACATION

The Treasure Coast is just above Miami and Fort Lauderdale and has a refined, luxurious atmosphere. It shares the same risk of bad storms and hurricanes with Miami, but with November bringing the hurricane season to a close, there usually won’t be a threat. It’s a beautiful place to vacation and November is starting to bustle with warmer waters at 78.6°F (25.9°C) during the holiday.

Our most highly recommended beach destinations on the Treasure Coast include West Palm, Delray, Pompano, Palm Beach, and Boca Raton. All feature slightly different styles, with West Palm and Palm Beach being the most popular. Pompano Beach has multiple diving sights, Boca Raton is great for recreational activities like golf and shopping and Delray has a booming cultural district.

SPACE COAST

The Space Coast is the closest beach area to Orlando, located on the Atlantic side of the state. It’s known as the home of Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach and the International Speedway in Daytona. Both Cocoa and Daytona have been popular tourist spots for decades, but are usually not busy in November.

This month will have water temperatures averaging 77°F (25°C). Since the Space Coast is on the Atlantic side of Florida toward the center of the state, it always has a chance of hurricanes. However, November reports a lower number of storms, so they will be less likely as the season comes to a close.

PARADISE COAST

The Paradise Coast is on the Southwest side of Florida, comprised of well-known cities like Naples and Fort Myers, and it’s also closest to the Everglades. The area tends to appeal to an older audience whose families and children will visit for the warm Florida weather. November will have lots of snowbirds back to inhabit the Paradise Coast for the next half year, making the cities jive again.

The waters are typically warm in November, averaging 76.5°F (24.7°C). The top beaches on this coast are Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers. Hurricanes can be an issue for this area, though November doesn’t typically see too many come through.

SUN COAST

The Sun Coast is a highly marketed area across the country, made up of Tampa Bay’s best beaches. It’s one of the most popular places to be on the Gulf with average water temperatures at 74.8°F (23.8°C) in November.

The busiest beaches include Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach, but the Sun Coast also has beautiful state park islands off Clearwater and Dunedin. Caladesi Island State Park and Honeymoon Island State Park are more secluded islands that are highly recommended by locals and shouldn’t be crowded in November.

CULTURAL COAST

The Cultural Coast is another great destination off the Gulf and is our personal favorite. In November, the water and weather will still be fairly warm with ocean temps at an average 74.8°F (23.8°C). The Cultural Coast offers a great in-between beach experience – not extremely quaint and not extremely ritzy, though certain accommodations can match these descriptions if you look hard enough.

Our best recommendation in this area is vacationing in Anna Maria Island, for the small, casual beach town vibe. But if you’re looking for a little more high-class Longboat Key, Sanibel Island and Captiva are great suggestions. Same as the Sun Coast, it’s less likely for hurricanes to make it this far, especially in November.

EMERALD COAST

The Emerald Coast is the entire Florida panhandle, spanning from Pensacola to Tallahassee. The nature of the towns in this area are a combination of the American South and the Florida Coastline. November water temperatures begin to cool off significantly, preparing for the incoming Winter weather. This month the ocean will average 72.3°F (22.4°C).

Pensacola, Destin and Panama City beaches are some of the most highly recommended vacation spots on the Emerald Coast. These beaches are ideal for families, couples and friend groups, with many activities and forms of recreation to accommodate all types of travelers. It’s very highly unlikely that hurricanes will come this way in November.

FIRST COAST

The First Coast is located on the top Northeast side of Florida’s Atlantic shores. It boasts Florida’s oldest cities of St. Augustine and Jacksonville. The water temperatures in the month of November will be cooling down with an average of 72.9°F (22.7°C). Visitors to this area will love the historical aspects of the region, along with the beautifully quiet shores. November doesn’t often see hurricanes, but it’s possible the First Coast could experience one this month.

St. Augustine is a great spot to visit all times of year with it’s historic tours and delicious many local restaurants and bars to enjoy. Nearby Flagler Beach offers a more secluded feeling with pristine, less crowded beaches and Jacksonville Beach is a nice getaway for the whole family. Amelia Island, part of the Georgia Sea Islands, is a luxurious spot for an upscale experience.

Top Florida Attractions In November

WALT DISNEY WORLD

Walt Disney World is the vacation capital of the world, therefore it’s Florida’s biggest attraction (with TONS to do) and remains busy most of the year. Walt Disney World is comprised of four different theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) and two water parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon). Disney is located outside of Orlando in Lake Buena Vista.

November has drier weather with mild temperatures. The parks and resorts are fairly crowded this month with moderate to high resort, ticket and food rates (which fluctuate with tourist volumes). Epcot’s popular Food & Wine Festival will close at the end of the month and Festival of the Holidays will begin after Thanksgiving.

In Magic Kingdom, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party begins on select nights. This is a separately ticketed nighttime event that anyone can attend to celebrate the season, meet special characters and eat exclusive meals and treats.

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO

Universal Orlando is Disney’s biggest rival, featuring two different theme parks (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure) along with one water park (Volcano Bay). It’s located on the outskirts of Orlando and has it’s own resort accommodations for guests to enjoy. The parks are known for movie-themed roller coasters, rides and attractions for all ages.

Weather in November will be dry and mild. Holidays at Universal Orlando Resort begin in the middle of the month, with the entire park decorated for Christmas. There are special shows, menu items and character meet and greets going on throughout the park for all attendees to experience.

SEAWORLD ORLANDO

SeaWorld is most popular for it’s aquatic animals, shows and coasters. It’s very close to Universal Orlando and makes a great full day of entertainment. SeaWorld has recently added big roller coasters like Manta and Mako to up their thrill game for older audiences. There is plenty for people of all ages to enjoy inside this ocean-themed park.

SeaWorld Christmas Celebration kicks off in November full of holiday traditions, special treats, live entertainment, and more for families and people of all ages.

BUSCH GARDENS

Busch Gardens is the biggest theme park in the Tampa Bay area, located in north Tampa. It’s a great option for a full day to add into your weeklong vacation in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater, about 15 miles from the Tampa International Airport. Howl-O-Scream, Tampa Bay’s Bier Fest

Busch Gardens is known for it’s big coasters, like Cheetah Hunt and Kumba, along with it’s African themed animal habitats where guests can see wildlife in designated areas. Busch Gardens Christmas Celebration starts this month, which includes a Winter Wonderland experience filled with Santa and friends, Christmas lights and holiday treats and entertainment.

LEGOLAND

Legoland is one of Florida’s newest theme parks located in Winter Haven, right in the middle of Central Florida. As you can imagine, Legoland is entirely themed after these popular little toy blocks which have inspired movies, roller coasters and water rides. There’s even a Lego resort where you can stay on vacation.

Holidays at Legoland begin in November, inviting guests to join in the Lego fun with festive decor, delicious food and special friends like Lego Santa, the Tin Man and the Gingerbread Man.

ICE! AT THE GAYLORD RESORT

This event held at the Gaylord Resort in Orlando every holiday season has been a popular experience that thousands of guests have thrilled to see. In the Pacific Northwest and in the northeast, it’s a prime time for whale-watching: Though you can see orcas, gray and humpback whales frolicking in the Puget Sound, off the coast of Seattle, year-round, summer months are a great time to see them in the San Juan Islands. Whale-watching tours cater to both destinations, but you can also look for the marine mammals from Alki Beach in West Seattle, not far from downtown.

Match your lure color to the water color. You never know exactly what color lures the fish will prefer on any given day so you should always try changing color when you’re not catching, but as a general rule of thumb, start out by choosing lures that match the water’s color.

• In green water, lime or chartreuse is usually a top pick.
• In clear water, reach for white or pearl.
• And in tannic-stained water, root-beer is often going to prove productive.

2. Fishing Lure Shapes & Sizes

Choose lure shapes and sizes that let you “match the hatch.” When predators are feeding on a school of small, thin fish like anchovies, a small, thin spoon that’s the same shape and size as those baitfish will often prove deadly — but a five-inch lure with a wide body may well go untouched.

Profile and length are usually the key features in this regard, because your quarry may well be focused on the shape and size of the prevailing bait and ignore other offerings.

3. The Right Size Fishing Gear

Get fishing gear that’s sized appropriately to the fish you’re pursuing, and don’t try to get one-size-fits-all rods and reels. The 12-pound-class casting reel you love using for bass is simply too heavy for tossing the tiny jigs and spinners that black crappie like to hit, and the four-pound-class ultralight that’s ideal for casting micro-jigs to those crappie can’t handle a big largemouth bass. Middle-of-the-road gear won’t be ideal for either task. Rather than trying to make do, get gear that’s sized for the species you’re targeting.

4. Trolling

If you try trolling (motoring along slowly while you tow lures behind the boat), before deploying the lines hold your lures next to the boat and watch them to be sure they’re swimming in a lifelike manner. If they look lethargic, try speeding up a bit.

Conversely, if they seem spastic pull the throttle back a notch. This will help you set the most effective boat speed, while also ensuring that you don’t accidentally set out a lure that’s fouled, damaged, or not swimming properly.

5. Fishing Line

There are countless types and brands of fishing line on the market, so be careful to choose wisely. Read Saltwater Fishing Lines and Freshwater Fishing Tackle, to get the low-down on the different varieties you’ll be choosing from.

As a general rule of thumb, remember that braid lines have very high sensitivity and great hook-setting power so they’re ideal for fishing with lures, while monofilament line has less sensitivity and stretches a bit so it’s ideal for when fish are nibbling on baits.

6. Best Time of the Day for Fishing

Fish early, and fish late. Many species of fish bite best right at dawn and dusk, in ambient sunlight. During the mid-day hours cloud cover can make for better fishing, and in direct sunlight (especially during the heat of summer) look for areas with shade. Fish often seek out shade when it’s hot and sunny and become more active during the cool hours of the day, just as you or I might.

7. Tides & Currents

Along with time of day, if you’re fishing in saltwater be sure to consider the tides and currents when you decide when to go fishing. The ebbing and flowing of the tides has a huge impact on how, when, and where saltwater fish feed.

8. Sharp Hooks

Always use new hooks and/or sharpen your old hooks. It sounds like simple common sense— because it is—but countless people go fishing every day with old, dull hooks. Will they catch a few fish? Maybe. But there’s no doubt they’d catch a whole lot more if they made sure each and every hook they’re using was as sharp as the day it was made.

9. Reel Drag

Use a scale to set your reel’s drag. The drag allows a fish to take line instead of pulling against it until it breaks, and having it set properly is critical. Truth be told most people just give a tug on the line until it “feels right.” That’s a poor substitute for tying your line to a hand scale and setting the drag to one third of the line’s rated breaking strength, which is generally considered the ideal.

10. Do Your Research

1: Coastal dune lakes

Walton County has rare natural features found in only a few other places around the world: Coastal dune lakes, bodies of freshwater that exist alongside the ocean. The county has 15 named dune lakes, where paddlers can enjoy the diverse wildlife, placid water, and the scenery unique to those lakes. It’s the only place in Florida where you can paddle a tea-colored tannic lake surrounded by sand dunes and look over to see the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. 

2: The beaches of Destin

Paddle a kayak off the beaches of Destin and you’ll understand where the Emerald Coast gets its name. The clear, turquoise waters are great for wildlife-watching and spotting dolphins, sea turtles, manatees, and more. One very popular kayaking and boating trip runs from Destin Harbor, bustling with restaurants, shops, and boat rental outfitters, to nearby Crab Island. Be prepared to see lots of other boats and people and be mindful of the tides.

3: Blackwater River

With white-sand beaches contrasting with dark, tannic water, the swiftly moving and visually stunning Blackwater River attracts paddlers of all kinds as well tubers in the summer months. Of the river’s 56 miles, 31 make up a designated paddling trail that begins five miles from the Alabama border in Okaloosa County and ends in the Blackwater River State Forest. Options here are many, with multiple launch points along the river (depending on the length and type of trip you’re planning).

4: Wakulla River

Kayakers on the 10-mile Wakulla River Padding Trail can expect an easy, gentle trip down a clear, spring-fed waterway filled with wildlife, including manatees, wading birds, alligators, turtles, and an abundance of fish. Guided tours are available.

5: Suwannee River Paddling Trail

Probably the most iconic Florida river adventure lies along the 171-mile Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, which starts in White Springs and ends at the Gulf of Mexico. Even those unfamiliar with the river itself might recognize the name from the beginning lyrics of Florida’s state song: “Way down upon the Swanee River, far, far away …”. And the river is far away from noise, from cities, and from the bustling attractions and amusements Florida is known for, but river camps and small downs provide overnight shelter and amenities along the way. The tannic water and quiet riverbanks are teeming with wildlife. Paddling difficulty on the Suwannee ranges from easy to very difficult, depending on what part of the river you paddle and the current water conditions.

6: Little Talbot Island State Park

The tidal creeks and salt marshes of Little Talbot Island State Park are perfect for a peaceful morning or afternoon on the water, with route options for everyone from experienced kayakers to beginners. The unspoiled barrier island is home to diverse wildlife and is an excellent place for birding. Rentals and guided eco-tours are available.

7: Weeki Wachee

The 7.4-mile spring-fed Weeki Wachee River has blue water, lots of wildlife, and a good current to do most of the paddling work for you, making it one of the top destinations for family-friendly paddling trips. The best way to kayak Weeki Wachee is to launch near the headsprings from Weeki Wachee Springs State Park’s resident outfitter, Boating in Florida, which offers rentals and shuttle services. It takes about three hours to paddle the roughly six miles from the launch to the takeout point at Rogers Park.

8: Indian River Lagoon bioluminescence

While kayaking trips typically happen in the daytime, there are some wonders that can be seen only in the dark. Naturally occurring, glowing algae make bioluminescent paddling possible, and seeing the electric blue underwater light show it creates is an experience unlike any other. Peak season is June through October, although bioluminescent paddling tours are available year-round. Besides glowing algae, the area is home to glowing comb jellies (similar to jellyfish, but they don’t sting), which can be seen November through March.

9: Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail

The 190-mile Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail is a paddler’s paradise of secluded beaches, protected estuaries, mangrove islands and tunnels, and tidal creeks. Here, your kayaking trip can be as short or as long as you want it to be.

The trail starts near Fort Myers and runs from Estero Bay (Mound Key, Bunche Beach and Hurricane Bay, Coconut Point) to Pine Island Sound (Tarpon Bay, Matlacha, Picnic Island) to the Caloosahatchee River (Hickey’s Creek, Orange River).

10: Indian Key

There are countless places to kayak in the Florida Keys, but Indian Key Historic State Park stands out for both its seclusion and relative ease of access. While the small island is accessible only by boat from Islamorada, it only takes about 20 minutes to kayak to the island, which was once was home to a shipwreck-salvaging business. Now paddlers go to sunbathe, hike, and explore the clear waters. Eagle rays, dolphins, and manatees are some of the marine animals you can find there.
